Basically, it's The Hobbit. It's the prelude to a much larger story, a small adventure with an encounter or two along the way to introduce you, not so much to the world which it does give you some glimps of, but to the characters and the people in the world.

The pacing isn't fast, but it's not ment to be. Considering it's based on a series of novels (that, coincidentally, also invented a couple languages much like LotR), this isn't too surprising.

Personally, it managed to capture my sense of wonder enough that I didn't care that it was slow (or rather, I found the pacing to match what was going on just fine), and from the first time I saw it on it's remaining my favorite anime series.
