Maybe but you miss the point. The author avoided an historical setting because he didn't want to be held by history. Even in the case of Prester John you face the problem of having a 20th century interpretation of Christianty applied to a medievel world. The game is dogmatic in its interpretation of Christianism. To be confronted with historical variants of that religion would force the author to enter a debate he wants to avoid. Notice that Roman Catolicism is there disguised as a fictional religion and its depiction is not flatering.
