I had the same reaction.

There is much I liked in the book, and do like still, but still at first glance, and after going through it all, there is something about it that rubs me the wrong way...so do the giants.

I guess I am just to rooted in traditional fantasy/folklore, to truely enjoy the variety which (as you point out) fantasy should keep it's self open to new ideas...
