Let me address your points:
1)There is no way for players who understand the combat rules better to run roughshot over players who don't, as long as the latter understand the general concept of the game. Picking a better maneuver will maybe net you one or two extra dice -if you're lucky. If the other guy invests his SAs, he can have plenty of dice more than that.
2)I see your argument about aging more like stating that the way it is done is not to your liking -that is not a valid definition of a flaw. If you look at the rules, you would see that using wounds is definitely out. It would not balance magic, it would make it nigh impossible. There's no hospitals in Weyrth that can plug you into a heart-lung machine or defibrilate when push comes to shove, and natural healing takes quite some time. Given the average lifespan in a setting with the medical conditions given, aging is a very serious issue.
3)I am not quite sure what you -or the original reviewer- are talking about, and am getting the impression you did not read the book attentively. TROS basic rules DOES contain stats and descriptions for numerous fantastic creatures, but creatures which are roughly humanoid. There is plenty of opportunity to fight fantastic creatures.
Yes, there are not animals. But the number of games for which the same is true is legion. The task for a core rules book is to make people able to play the game, not describe the general flora and fauna of the game world. The book is pretty big as it stands, and the supplement detailing beasts was the FIRST to come out of the pipeline. Your demands boil down to demanding that the book be another 25% larger, and, consequentially, more expensive. I don't think that would have been in anyone's interest.
