Actually, go see Freddy vs. Jason. It gives you Jason's entire back story. Also, the original Friday the 13th (which Jason is not in) goes into the story of why he eventually becomes what he does.

The early Jason movies were intended to be scary, and some were. In our jaded society, however, the gore becomes camp in and of itself, so in that sense, yeah, you'll have fun with the series.
