<< That whole quantity vs quality thing. People who buy gaming books to read rather than use sometimes forget that key point. >>

Not only that, but people seem to forget that most publishers put out what amounts to "limited edition" print runs of their products.

Chew on this (from Todd Downing):

"Many 64-page supplements sit at the $14.95 price point, and 96-pagers regularly hit $18.95 - $19.95. 128-page books (softcover) can hit $22.95 - $24.95. That's just reflecting the realities and costs of the industry. It's important to keep in mind that the RPG industry remained artificially deflated in terms of MSRP for years, in the face of rising paper and printing costs, and higher cost of living for their creators. They are only now beginning to reflect the real cost of creating the goods. Bigger books and hardcovers now routinely break the $40 and $50 barrier."

"John Nephew has posted extensively on the costs and realities of RPG publishing on the RPGnet forums. What many gamers don't realize is that unless you're a WotC (and how many publishers can even come close to their numbers?), you are printing limited editions (usually in the 1000-2000 range) and therefore have a much smaller margin than the game with the 50,000 copy run."
