No, I am saying that the reader having a negative reaction to protagonists and/or scenario isn't necessarily an indicator of bad fiction and sometimes it can be a sign of superior craftsmanship.
Of course it is valid to question the aesthetic decision of the writer if they render something unreadable for a significant fraction of their readership, but you can criticise at this meta-level, whilst still conceding that the work is well executed and has merit.
