So when he tries to show the process of how a decent person can be twisted into a monster (and Arya is well on track to becoming a monster unless she gets some help) he gets complaints about soggy pacing and glacial story development. Talk about damned if you do...

Although not, you'll note, by the same people.

My problem with Arya's story is not with what he's trying to do, but with the execution of it. Too slow, too repetetive, not interesting enough.

To a lesser extent, some (not all) of the Daenerys stuff has felt a bit padded, too. Then again, she's not really interacting at all with the characters on Westeros, so I can understand that Martin wants to keep reminding us that her story is carrying on in the background, even if that means padding a bit.

As I've already said, I'm really enjoying this series. The tendency to occasionally "pad", which was mosltly only a problem with in Book 2, is really the only major flaw with it.

Personally I am (now) really engaged by Sansa's story.

Ditto. Call me a bitter misanthropist, but I'm enjoying seeing her life get worse and worse with every step :-)

Not sure if she's the next Cersei - I can't see Cersei ever being quite this drippy and clueless. He's obviously got something in mind for her.

I wonder if he's somehow setting Arya and Sansa up to be opposing power blocs at some point in the future?
