Converted from Phorums BB System
Granted, but a competing idea: that we are all essentially equal is even stronger.
An adult Englishman, an accomplished journalist, is walking down an American sidewalk when he sees a six-year-old boy ahead of him coming his way on a bike.
Calmly and pleasantly, the boy goes by him, and looks up and says "Hi."
The writer is floored. And sputters looking for something to say as the boy bikes away. Nothing like that would happen back home.
And the writer writes that that was essential America. Where a six-year-old boy thinks himself the equal of an adult successful in his career.
