>>My good friend Jim Butcher writes pulpy entertainment in an urban modern fantasy vein, much like Laurel, but his work is not only better, it's very much aware of its genre and its inherent lack of class. Jim's always said he doesn't write fine literature, he writes entertaining stories. That's why I like Jim.

Jim Butcher is a damn good writer, I'm actually re-reading "Stormfront" again for about the 5th time. Have to love stories where the hero is a self-depricating sarcastic everyman...who just happens to be a wizard-slash-detective with a cash flow problem.
Pulpy, modern, supernatural, occult-ish books. What's not to love?
Umm, back on topic, personally I think Martin is brilliant for exactly the reasons that some people seem to not like him. The characters just seem real for the setting. They act like real people not literary characters, sometimes people do really dumb things and it's nice to see the "heroes" being just as human (and petty, ignorant and dumb) as the "villians" from time to time.
