No, you can't effectively defend against a poleaxe with your basket weaving skill, and nothing in the rules suggests that you mgith. I think Wulf went way over into the deep end with his comments along these lines, which I think are highly missleading.

"Want to counter his Sword and Shield Combat with your Fast Talk? Go ahead and try. Want to parry a Lightning Bolt with Greatsword Combat? Well, you can try, but you’ll get a hefty penalty to the roll… "
Those were my examples. In what way are they 'over into the deep end' or 'highly misleading'? Are you suggesting the rules do NOT allow you to talk an attacker out of a combat? Or that there would not be a penalty to parrying a lighting bolt with a sword?

Essentialy what the game says is that it's up to the narrator to decide if an ability use is apropriate.

Which is exactly what I said in answer to the question.

Finaly, the Hero Wars game system does not lack injuries. Character can sustain wounds, and take penalties under the game mechanics for doing so.

In other words,
"There is an optional rule hidden away in the GM section of the rules allowing you to do a little damage during a contest"
just as I said. If you win a fight, you do not get injured barring this optional rule, which causes minor wounds only.
