In the example I gave, they are the same. I think doubloign up in pain is amply simulated by a loss of AP such that you lose the contest.
If you were to say 'they don't have to be the same' that is true. Not all contests are extended contests, and so not all ability (feat, whatever it is) uses result in AP changes, since APs are only used in extended contests.

It _can_ reflect the use fo feats and special moves as you yourself said in the previous sentence. It doesn't always though, true. Characters in an extended contest can still perform unrelated actions, which aren't part of the extended contest and so don't affect APs. Breaking someone's shield could be treated as just such an unrelated action.
