I said it could be done that way, I also said it does not reflect the use of feats and maneouvres. All it does it play with AP and ignore the actual roleplaying situation.

It doesn't always though, true. Characters in an extended contest can still perform unrelated actions, which aren't part of the extended contest and so don't affect APs. Breaking someone's shield could be treated as just such an unrelated action.

If you use the Feat to actually break a shield, the shield is broken. If you don't have a shield, you don't get the armour bonus for a shield. If you use Sword & Shield Combat and have no shield, there is a stated penalty to reflect that in the rules. You may use both these penalties AND a reduction in AP, but if you ignore the penalties you are simply shuffling numbers, not reflecting the actual Feats at all.
