I've looked carefully through HeroQuest, and it's a lot less gung-ho about matching arbitrary abilities. In fact it makes it clear that you can only use an ability if the referee agrees that it is apropriate, and that you may well suffer a modifier. This is a very different emphasis from the previous approach, but from your review would lead me to believe that HQ was even more lax in this area that HW. This is very far from being the case.

Nothing in HeroQuest would lead me to believe that you could defeat a berserk troll using your Fast Talk ability. Since the review was of HeroQuest, I would liked to have read about what HeroQuest says, and how that game discusses the appropriate use of abilities. Instead you seem to have reviewed what previous editions or versions of the game system said, and what had been discussed in forums.
