To be clear Zendog, HeroQuest does not say you can defeat a raging troll that's attackign you with an axe using your Fast Talk ability, or any such thing.

In HeroQuest the referee determines if any use of an ability is appropriate to the situation, and if the ability seems useable but isn't quite appropriate, you simply apply a penalty. An example that is given is that if you are using a "Cross Country Running" ability in a sprinting race, you can but you should probably suffer a stiff penalty on your ability rating.
