Dying Earth is a great evocation of Jack Vance but the system can be used for all sorts of other settings where 'standard' fantasy systems would fall down.

Soap operas and situation comedies work well with Dying Earth rules, because so much is centred on how people communicate and whether they can talk their way out of trouble or win support for a plan.

You can easily construct taglines that keep people firmly in The West Wing, or Friends, or even Six Feet Under territory. Spells can become surprise revelations ("I am your long lost twin!")...
