My Problem With The Hero System

Converted from Phorums BB System

The Hero games, starting with Champions, have always seemed to me to be the RPG rules equivalent of Assembly Language. It isn't so much a game system as a system for you to build you're own game. It is really, to my tastes, an overdense system that is far too numbers heavy, which for others is probably it's appeal. As a role-player, I prefer games that are more playable "off-the-shelf". That does not mean that as a GM I do not like to build my own world; I do. I just feel that the Hero Systems do not really capture the spirit of their genres. Instead, they seem to capture the spirit of a college math class. That's just my opinion, though. For Fantasy Role-playing, I prefer Runequest, which is smart, quick, adaptable, yet still gritty. The Hero Systems are impressive in their density, but are just not for me.
