I think they're essential. I also liked baboons & morkanths, plus the oddball monsters like walktpi and those jack 0'lantern things.

RQ was simply brimming with brilliant ideas. When I first got into roleplaying, we abandoned D&D in about 18 months and took up RQ insteand and played until 1985 and we all went to university.

I think the rules pleased our over-analytical teenaged minds. In spite of our natural hack'n'slay tendency we had to work at temples and stay somewhere to train up spells and skills, and this forced us to interact with the setting to to turn our characters into the killing machines we wanted. When you immerse yourself in it, I think it all just fits together, whether it makes senses or not.
