As one of the die-hards, I'd like to object.
If there is a flaw in the rules, then there is a flaw in the rules. "Die-hards" have played dozens, if not hundreds, of different games. They know that a rules flaw can ruin a game when it is exploited and that it is only a matter of time before someone does.
Of course, explaining a rules flaw and why it is bad can be extremely difficult. Just try and tell somebody that the "Free Parking" house rule that most people play with is bad for the game of Monopoly.
Games like Attack! depend on diplomacy between the players. Players negotiate borders, NATs, Defense treaties, ect... Eventually, there will come a time when an ally will have to backstab a treaty partner.
The absolute best time to stab a treaty partner is when they are Player One because you can build twice, attack twice and blitz once or twice before they can even respond. This is because Player One effectively skips his next turn. With the diplmatic blitz and Poli-Action card rules, it is possible to launch the attack against the victim's weakest front. Get 2 or more players involved in the stab and you have a regular gang-bang going on.
The stab is an acceptable part of the game. Sitting out a turn while your country is being carved up is not.
