It's my understanding that planes are not vulnerable for having two sides of the die. I believe that the die rolls are matched up to the ATTACKING troops, not the recieving troops, so this gives planes a better chance of actually hitting. This question was brought up in the eaglegames.net forums.

Or I may be sorely mistaken...
