The main means of differentiation seems to be in the different specialities of wizardry.

While you might have all wizards, one might be a Necromancer, one an Abjurer, one a Conjurer, etc. There are 8 different types.

Also, if I were going to run a campaign, I probably wouldn't have the PCs all start as first level wizards, but some other class, depending on their background.

Like a rich kid would be a aristocrat or noble, a street kid would be a rogue, a tough kid would be a fighter, etc.

A lot of the teachers at the school have a level or two in other classes, so it wouldn't be out of line
