That Ace Rimmer was human, part of a long chain of Ace Rimmers descended from the first one. 'Ace Rimmer' became a title long ago, of a legendary hero travelling between dimensions, righting wrongs, defending the innocent, protecting the weak, and so on.

(This was from Stoke Me A Clipper (I think it was called) in series VII.)

That's why Arnold Judas Rimmer left Red Dwarf, to replace the Nazi-shot Ace.
