Remember non-mages (that is, people without any levels of Sorcery) can perform ritual magic. Xander has set books on fire and summoned Sweet; Giles did counter magic back in the third episode and summoned/contacted Igon and that blue-skinned shaman guy long before the coven power-up.

All you need is detailed instructions, a decent Willpower+Occultism, and some luck or drama. Witches and warlocks just get to do it faster, easier and without all that messy eye of newt getting into the carpet.

Also remember that demons mostly *want* to get summoned, because they always get something out of it and generally get the better half of the deal.
