I'm reminded of Terry Pratchetts 'Carpe Jugulum'. The villains are a clan of sophisticated vampires who develop a temporary immunity to garlic, holy symbols etc by working on the assumption that they are psychosomatic. The patriarch built up his kids resistance by showing them pictures of as many religous symbols as he could think of. Of course after their resistance collapsed they realised they saw religous symbols *everywhere*, since over the vast span of human history nearly all combinations of symbols had been used in a religion. Just a thing that might be a little similar.
