Converted from Phorums BB System
Okay, normally my opinion of reviewers is. . .well. . .let's not go there. Let's just say that I generally get great reviews, but my opinion on the entire review process is NOT positive. (I was bitten by a movie reviewer as a kid. Okay not really, but figuratively.)
That said, I think Dan did a GREAT job here and showed something I've said for a while--that SW isn't for everyone. It's for those who like to play games that frequently feature lots of tactical combat.
It does take a few tweaks--I consider them world rules--to fit into other settings. In 50 Fathoms, for example, starting characters are allowed to ignore the Rank Requirements for the Edges because it's a "heroic" world (only during character creation).
In "On the Rocks," an adventure that goes up next week on RPGNOW.COM, we have an alternate wound system for more gritty games (something like what Deadlands will likely use, btw).
If you think of SW "out of the box," I think Dan's review is just fine. There's a couple of small points I might argue, but even those are subjective and YMMV, so I'll happily concede.
So despite the fact that this isn't a glowing review, I'd have to say thanks to Dan (and Robert). I think they did a great job of explaining how things work, figuring out what may or may not jibe with their particular style, and communicating that with the public. I have 0 problems with that and *sincerely* appreciate their efforts.
Kudos!
