So what's the deal with this, anyway?

Converted from Phorums BB System
I had some interest in these figs as supplemental D&D figs. I do paint figures & enjoy it, but painting is time-consuming. So I figured if we could pick up a bunch of figures comparatively cheaply, it would be nice.
Which leads me to my question ... what the heck is WotC doing with this game? I had *thought* these aimed at being D&D accessories with which you could also play some other game. Unfortunately, the random packaging makes them unusable for D&D (or D&D-equivilant) because you can't get the figures you need (and are forced to buy way too many figures you don't want), making it much too expensive. Nobody has much good to say about the game itself, so I have little interest in trying it over the various clix games or the new LotR game.
So I find myself wondering, as I say, what WotC was thinking. Clearly they're trying to leverage their D&D brand, but I'd say they failed to take much advantage of it.
