I've played 6-12 games with 2 players, and it works quite well. Jack gets away pretty rarely because you usually don't go through the whole deck, and that lowers the strategic content a little bit, but it's otherwise great.

I've just played one game with 4 players, and it went pretty slowly, but I think that was partially because of the players. We never got to the end of the two deck shuffles, instead someone always went out. Jack got away about 1 time in 3, which made that strategic play much more important.

Overall, I'd say the game has some flaws at both the 2 and 4 player level, but overall works at both ends of the player spectrum.

I've never played it with 3.
