It comes from the episode "The Zeppo", which focussed on Xander. The source of the term is Zeppo Marx, the lesser-known fourth member of the Marx Brothers who was the "normal" one, lacking any schtick and, it could be argued, any function. In the episode, it was, indeed, a slam applied to Xander by Cordelia.
