Thank you for the response. I think I know what you mean, though I must admit that I've always found the distinction Monte Cook and John Tynes (the authors of <b>CoC d20</b>) drew between what they called <i>pulp</i> horror and what they called <i>grim</i> horror to be an odd one.
They suggest pulp horror is like the stuff found in Robert E. Howard's Cthulhu mythos stories, while grim horror in material more like that written by H. P. Lovecraft. The terminology ignores the fact that Lovecraft's stories appeared in magazines such as <i>Weird Tales</i> and <i>Astounding Stories</i> and so are as much pulp as Howard's tales. I think they would have been better off just noting the different stylistic approaches -- and perhaps contrasting both to other writers like Clark Ashton Smith -- as a way of emphasising the broad range covered by Mythos authors, rather than trying to suggest that Lovecraft's stories somehow weren't "pulp".
That's my opinion, anyway.
