While never directly addressed you can assume that the smuggling that Serenity took part in necessitated modifications to the engines as well as the body of the ship there were numerus bolt holes for hiding cargo. the real difficulty in adapting Firefly though is that we only got to see the tip of the iceberg. Now if the movie becomes a reality and between that and good DVD sales maybe new episodes get written then we might have the foundation to build on.
