Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is what I've been saying since I first read this book. It's far too easy to dismiss someone as insane or doing something evil "just because." Sure, there are plenty of those people in history or literature, but why does that mean that villains in games have to be like that? You may not agree with what they're doing, they're motives, or they're reasoning, but I think that if you have a villain who has a deep-rooted reason for doing something, it makes it more interesting for everybody involved. There's nothing I hate more as a player than a villain who's actions are justified with "because he's evil." And as a DM, I almost always analyze my villains before bringing them or their actions into a game.
