Just a couple points:

The analogy you draw between misusing SAs and handing out half the normal xp in D&D is not a very good one. If you had out half the normal xp, you simply slow the progress of the characters. By misusing SAs, you can have a seriously negative impact on the game play itself.

Regarding the bona fides of you and your group: I got the SA rules the first time I read them. Does that mean I'm a whole lot smarter than the lot of you? That you're all a pack of dullards? Nope, not at all. Its simply a fact that you can't write something such that everyone is going to understand it.

I've done a fair bit of technical writing over the years, and I've learned that no matter how I phrase something not everyone is going to get it. I can show the same bit of writing to a high school dropout and a brilliant physician, and I'm not surprised if the dropout gets it and the physician scratches his head, as sometimes happens.
