This confused me for a while too, and I think Dan may have the same stumbling block I did. So I'll jump in to echo Wulf's point.

When it's my "action" in a contest, I'm the only one bidding AP - even though I'm acting against an entity that also has AP. Any references to a bid being lost, gained or transferred in the contest results refers to MY bid.

When it's my opponent's action, he's the one bidding, and vice versa.
