Converted from Phorums BB System
"Namely, the lack of anything resembling challenge ratings has lead to starting a fight with a monster rolled on the random encounters table that turns out to be one of the toughest creatures in the game."
Welcome to non-d20 gaming! =)
My players actually like this aspect, because they actually have to look at their situation whenever things could get hostile, sometimes they even go out of their way to avoid things. It adds tension and a dose of realism that makes for a more satisfying session.
"Unless you have a large group or a group predominately composed of combat monsters, "Maiden Voyage" is a massacre."
That was not our experience. We have a doreen with two knives, an atani musketeer, a water mage with Stun (no bolt and the stun was not effective in the Maiden Voyage) and a kid with a sling. Not exactly a combat monster party nor very large in numbers. The battle was tough, but no permanent injuries and only one PC incapacitated.
"Razorwinds [sic] (Mentioned before) are unkillable without an air mage or fire mage."
Not true. The above group has encountered razorwings on two seperate occasions and they were dangerous, but hardly unkillable.
The difference may be that i am pretty familiar with the ins and outs of SW and my group has played through Evernight, so we're pretty comfortable with surviving a SW session. The players know how to get the most out of the system and that makes a big difference.
Perhaps your group hasn't played much SW or 50F, it takes some time to get out of the d20 mentality, which is important, because that same mindset ported into SW makes for a very frustrating game.
Good Luck & Happy Gaming,=)
