As screenmonkey mentioned, the Player's Guide is available as a pdf at www.rpgnow.com, currently $7.95. I got it as a cheap way in and because my FLGS didn't have the full book.
It contains all the character creation and rules, like ship-to-ship combat and spells, as well as a very short gazetteer of the main ports. It doesn't contain the full setting info, the adventures (one sample would have been nice) or the encounters section (presumably a bestiary).
You could make a decent stab at running something with just this and the Savage Worlds quickstart download, I think. The problem is that the rules in here refer back to the ones in the Savage Worlds rulebook, e.g. for groups of minor characters, vehicle rules, magic. So if you don't have SW you'd have to wing those bits (and/or plan to minimise their use). If you were planning to use a different system anyway it doesn't matter - you'd probably still want the full 50 Fathoms book for the setting and adventures, but what's here would probably give enough clues for specific adaptations in a generic system (given the quickstart as an interpretation guide).
I'd say there's enough in the Player's Guide to get you interested, but not enough to get you hooked. Which is no criticism, of course, given what it's designed for.
