While I haven't made up my mind about the difficulty of recovery, I do think it's worth noting that if you've lost your whole army, you've already made a major strategic mistake. The game is built so that you can and should "run away and live to fight another day"; if you refuse to pull out until you no longer have a viable fighting force, then to a certain extent you deserve what you get.
I don't want to look too hard at "realism" in a game where frost giants romp and stomp on the Greeks, but it's pretty hard to come back from losing your entire army in a real-life conflict too.
