After the first few times of hosing the losing player after realizing his position was pretty much hopeless, we did exactly this, allowing him to get back in the game.

Another game that has this same problem HUGE is Serenissima, which I absolutely love as a game, but which you have to play by gentleman's rules or else its just no fun for the guy who gets screwed.
