Chain coif covers around the head and flows down over the shoulders. When you get into plate, this guy's a walking tin can:

Even if you don't hit plate, you'll hit chain beneath.

I don't want to be a pain, but I've made chainmail, including a coif, and mail removes almost nothing as far as impact trama. If you get hit in the neck with a staff you are going to be hurting bad. It will help against slashing blades fine, and it may stop peircing blades, but you will still be bruised at best.
