well really, between the fall of the roman empire and the rise of the carlolingians (about 450-750C.E.) is called the "post-classical" period, and mainly focuses on the Byzantines and the Moslums. with the carolingians europe enjoys a breif rebirth until about 888C.E., where the "dark ages" begin, where they end is arguable but between 1000C.E. and 1100C.E. is a good, safe, bet.
