I'm not sure if you can really say that D & D was an outgrowth of the rules.

In the original D & D rules, you were directed to use the combat rules for Chainmail OR use the alternative rules.

The alternative rules are the rules which became "canon".

Frankly, I'm quite curious as to how D & D would be like played with the Chainmail combat rules. It seems as though all the combat was decided on the roll of one six sided die. How does armor and experience level figure into the results?
