I doubt it's that common. I think living about 7 blocks from UC Berkeley and thus not far from the Silicon Valley helps.

My RPG group is currently running at 6-8, mostly folks I knew in college, and it fluctuated as high as the way-too-many 15 during halycon days.

My board game group is currently running 3-7, which is a bit too high on the high side too.
