The funding source was Scott Rosenberg, the former head of Malibu. Malibu's business model seemed in theory to be a successful one: try to break even on the comics and hope one becomes a popular media project. Then cash out the company. Awesome did have material like Jeff Matsuda's Kaboom that could have been turned into TV series.

Mr. Liefeld did suffer from a track record of making promises that hwas unable to fulfill. Infectious enthusiasm is not enough for a successful business.
