I'm actually with the detractors on how much randomness is in Memoir 44. It is a lot. I'm about 7 games in so far, (along with tons and tons of Battle Cry games.)

The dice aspect of luck is fairly low because there are so many dice rolled. Cards on the other hand CAN rule the game. I've played both Battle Cry and Memoir 44 where one side had a clear advantage in hand, and a competent general was near certain to win.

That said. I think Memoir has less card luck than Battle Cry. Cards are more balanced. (As Chris pointed out some cards are just better.)

However, there is a certain ability level involved in Memoir. Of those 7 games, I was able to see bad choices made by the loser, that seriously contributed to his defeat.

And in all 7 of my games, the more experienced player won. (Cough. I have played a lot of Battle Cry. Cough.)
