Ha! I got a chuckle out of this quote, not because it's wrong, but I think because it does represent how perceptions have changed and how relentlessly "upmarket" wargames have gone now that euros have largely killed off the simpler end of the wargaming spectrum.
That said, there is still a fair amount of good stuff in the low end of the wargame market that combines both good games and decent simulation value to create really great stuff. I might point you in the direction of Columbia Games, for one (http://www.columbiagames.com). Some of their stuff may be longer than M'44, but it's only a little more complicated and never boring
