Thanks Chris.
I was quite thrilled to find an actual play review of Universalis up on RPG.net today. The last review here on the game was almost exactly a year ago, so its really great that a year later people are still finding it, playing it, and being impacted enough to write a review about it.
I've given some thought to the "is an RPG" question over the years, and I find myself pretty much agreeing with Eero on the matter.
Mike notes that he often begins demos by coming straight out and saying "this isn't an RPG" in order to break prospective players of built in expections. Ideally, I look forward to the day, when the true range and diversity of the possibilities of what RPGs can be has become as as widely accepted in the gaming community as "traditional expectations" are today.
So in that sense, I firmly believe that Universalis is an RPG. It may not look much like the vast majority of games to bear that label to date, but I hope (somewhat immodestly perhaps) that it acts as a sign post along the road to a whole range of untapped possibilities of what RPGs might look like in the future.
But that said...as long as people buy it, play it, and have fun with it...I don't really care what they call it ;-)
