This, I think is an ESSENTIAL point.

The designers actually note it in places on Jedi Counseling, where they have said at points that the movies speak with two voices on a particular topic and they had to pick one, knowing full well they were contradicting the other. (A specific example: Can you deflect Force Lightning?)

Note that I do not think they nailed it in all cases, e.g., the book rules for blaster bolt deflection are really far from the movies I think, but one thing that I think players need to keep in mind is that the game is not the movie.

On the matter of the Ion Cannon from Ep. V, well this was a PLANETARY-based weapon. So who knows how big it was? My problem with the starship rules is that it's possible for a wookie (or other strong guy) to beat an X-Wing to a pulp in a surprisingly short amount of time. The old WEG system worked nicely here, because it capped damage for sources and targets of very different scale.
