Well thats the point of d20 and the OGL- to create single system of reference for roleplaying.

Its achieving this through network externalities, which are worth reading up on. Basically they create a positive feedback loop in which the more people play d20, the better it is. As it gets better, more people play, ad infinitum. (well nearly. not totally infinite though)

The only defence against a positive network is to go and create a game that is so inherently better and more popular (while being totally incompatible with d20) that the d20 network users move to your game network.
