<i>Directly attacking the reviewer isn't going to get you anything but bad vibes from potential customers. It's not like a anyone is going to say, "I've changed my mind about this game because the designer attacked the reviewer, and asserted that he really really enjoyed his own game."</i>
A pretty good rule of marketing thumb is this: any well-written review in a notable market will have a positive effect on sales, whether the review is positive or negative in its outlook.
At the same time that I give my own opinions of a game, I also do my best to really lay out how the game works, to give everyone else their opportunity to make that assessment too, and thus go and buy it if they want, even if I didn't like it.
I also have to agree with Clint that an overly defensive post from a publisher, even if totally understandable from an emotional and personal viewpoint, is only going to impact sales in a negative way, perhaps offsetting any good done by a review, perhaps doing more damage than that to company reputation.
