I suppose different people will always read the same text differently, but I thought the designer's reply was well written and diplomatically stated. The biggest problem seems to stem from the designer's statement that "the reviewer has not done enough homework." To me, that means the designer believes it will take more than one play of the game to truly dig into the game.
Further more, on the Yahoo discussion group Spielfrieks, to which Shannon regularly contributes and which is primarily geared toward the kinds of games Shannon reviews here, many contributers believe - and state their belief frequently - that one play is insufficient to actually provide an in depth review of a board game. One play is more than enough to figure out whether you like the game or not, but it's rarely sufficient to determine just how random a game truly is.
I haven't played Smugglers (though I'm interested) nor do I have anything to do with Playus Maximus.
