I've recently placed a reply in the other thread "Once again, a superbly written review" in which I outline where many of the strategic decisions are.

You're exaclty right about the placement of random events between plan and outcome. Some events are like this in smugglers, but most actually aren't. You have planets hanging around for quite a while and many cards are conditional on decisions you make.

The level of how much randomness is "just right" is a subjective one. For those trying to get a feel for where it lies, I'd say it's much more unpredictable than, say, Axis & Allies, but not quite as random as Talisman. It's somewhat similar to Talisman in some ways, but the freedom of movement and choice of action bring the randomness down a few notches.
